by Jessica Mele The first thing you should do is try to set certain hours that you will work each day, or at least how many hours you want to work each day. Of course, depending on your situation you might not be able to work all of your hours in a row, but at least then you know you will be getting a certain amount of work done a day. Some people are morning people, and may want to get up early, work for 7-8 hours in a row, and then be done for the day by the middle of the afternoon. A night person on the other hand, might prefer to sleep in. They might then get some work done around the house or run errands and not start working until around 4pm, and then put in their 7-8 hours, finishing up sometime after midnight. If you are watching others, your workday might be broken up into different sections; for example, you might work an hour or two before a child wakes up, and then not get a chance to work again until they go down for a nap. But then once the child goes to sleep for the night, you will have another 4-5 hours that you can work. Another problem some people have when working on their own home based business is that they are always working on their business, since they are always at home. Just like you set aside certain hours to work on your business, you need to set certain times that you are doing other things, for example taking weekends off. This way you can recharge, and be ready to work again on Monday. Another way to manage your time is to make lists. If you create a list each evening for what you want to get done the next day, you are more likely to know exactly what you want to get done, and be able to get it done. Plus, if you have a set list of things you wish to accomplish the next day, you might be able to get it done in a short amount of time and then be done with work for the day. This is a great way to make sure that you get certain things done. A great thing about working at home is that you don’t have to waste time waiting for others. If you are waiting on someone to get back to you for your business, you can always get something done around the house, like do laundry. This can work the other way too. If you are waiting for something to dry, it can be a good time to get a little bit of work done. Working at home on your own business can be great. You just need to make sure you manage your time well, so that you don’t end up spending hours “working”, and not getting anything done, or the opposite, having no time to work at all. If you set certain times for work, and have a list of things to get done, you are more likely to be more productive in getting things done. If you are working at home, you might find that it is harder to manage your time than if you were working at an office. When working outside of the home, you normally work those set 7-8 hours a day, and then you come home and are done. When you work at home though, things can be very different.
